Jaha Dukureh is a highly esteemed individual, renowned as the CEO and founder of Safe Hands for Girls—an organisation dedicated to providing support to African women and girls who have survived Female Genital Mutilation (FGM). Her relentless efforts in the field have earned her the prestigious appointment as the Regional UN Women Ambassador for Africa in February 2018.
Having personally endured the harrowing experiences of FGM and forced child marriage, Dukureh passionately advocates for eradicating these practices in Africa, with a particular focus on UN Women’s initiatives. Her work centers around mobilising youth and promoting awareness about the urgent need to end FGM and child marriage across the continent. By collaborating with women’s organisations and civil society, Dukureh was pivotal in influencing the Gambian Government to outlaw FGM through effective youth mobilisation and campaigning in 2015. Her global leadership in this fight is highly regarded.

End FGM Campaign in Gambia
Jaha has actively participated in numerous FGM campaigns through her network, Safe Hands for Girls. Her efforts have made a significant impact on countless lives. As a result, many circumcisers have abandoned their practices, and in 2012, she successfully influenced the ban of FGM in her home county, The Gambia. Jaha's campaigns extend beyond borders, and a notable example is her influence in Liberia, where she persuaded district chiefs to implement the ban on FGM in communities.
End Child Marriage Campaign
Jaha strongly believes that child marriage deprives children of their fundamental human rights. Utilizing her network, she has spearheaded campaigns against child marriage by providing support to families, enabling them to send their daughters to school. Recognizing poverty as one of the primary drivers of child marriage, she assists numerous families in ensuring that their daughters receive an education, empowering them to fulfill their potential and contribute positively to society.
Garden Support for Women
One of the main pillars of Jaha's network is women empowerment. Through her support, she has empowered numerous rural women by providing them with garden assistance. This initiative aims to empower mothers so that they can effectively meet the needs of their children and put an end to child marriage and all forms of gender-based violence against women children. Jaha has generously supported women's gardens both financially and with other resources, with the hope that the profits generated from these gardens will be utilized to meet the needs of their children, particularly ensuring their education.

Access to quality education is a fundamental human right for every child, and it is the mission of her network to ensure that girls are able to complete their education without being forced into marriage. She believes that girls who complete their education can help both their families and their country to grow and develop.
